The Art of Fall Skincare

Updated: Oct 1, 2021

The clouds roll in, brisk breezes begin to blow, autumn brings cooler weather, and with those seasonal changes, certain triggers can irritate even sensitive skin. It’s easy to forget about how the drier weather and humidity impact our skin, and it’s especially easy to forget about diligently continuing your skincare regime. But it’s critical we do so, and our skin will thank us for it during these harsher months ahead.

I really take advantage of this time, intentionally protecting my skin and keeping it fresh with dermaplaning, micro-needling, and lasers. This is when I’ll change my face wash to a more gentle, PH-balanced one. It’s when I’ll splurge on a weekly sheet mask to help hydrate my skin. I’m consistent in exfoliating using a retinol cream, Vitamin C, and extra serums to gently remove dead skin cells and dryness. Exfoliation doesn't have to be harsh, how often you exfoliate primarily depends on your skin type. I take the extra time out of my day to take care of myself and what my body needs, building confidence through small acts of self-love. And people notice it. Family, friends, and even strangers (like an employee at a restaurant this morning) compliment my skin’s glow. That’s why I love writing these blogs that inform people about their skin, helping anyone age gracefully with a few small acts that wind up going a long way.

So as we head into fall, and as you read through this blog, remember that the purpose behind taking care of your skin is more than just a look or scratching off a to-do item. This is about prioritizing what you need, building confidence in yourself while enhancing the beauty that’s already within you.

So how do we keep our skin looking and feeling healthy and beautiful this fall? Seasonal changes can irritate sensitive skin, not to mention us raising the thermostat when temperatures drop, which only contributes to dehydrated, tight, and flaky skin. That’s because dry, indoor air causes water to evaporate from the skin.

Cooler weather (sweater-boot weather!) is refreshing. It tends to make us want to spend more time outside, which can set our skin up to become dry and itchy. That’s why right now is the perfect time to reassess your go-to-skin-care routine. Because as the seasons change, so should your skin routine. Here are four skin-care ideas for you to try out this fall:

1. Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is kind of like shaving your face, but with a single blade that helps remove dead skin cells and peach fuzz. This helps smooth out the skin, keeping it youthful and fresh-looking. The whole treatment shouldn’t is less than an hour, and can be done by a local esthetician or at home. To do this at home, you’ll simply need to purchase Dermaplaning tools online. A con to this is the blades aren’t as sharp as at an esthetician’s office. I go every 6 weeks during the cold months, and would recommend going every few months.

2. Deluxe Hydra-facial

A deluxe hydra facial is a non-invasive treatment that extracts impurities and moisturizes with serums. It’s pretty much an all-in-one treatment that works immediately. You can get this done professionally through an esthetician or even a dermatologist. The procedure should take no longer than 40 minutes.

3. Micro-needling with Radio-frequency

What it is, what it does, how often/where/average cost

Micro-needling uses tiny needles and radiofrequency waves to rejuvenate and tighten your skin. This treatment is a form of controlled skin injury. The damage stimulates the growth of healthy new skin is one of the best facials you’ll ever experience. The recovery time is really great, working in less than a day (sometimes immediately after).

P.S. a lot of places stop at the jawline, but the neck and chest are a must!!

4. The Vbeam

The Vbeam is a kind of laser treatment that uses intense bursts of light to safely and effectively remove vascular and pigmented discolorations, including rosacea, sun spots, age spots, freckles, poikiloderma, port wine stains, and facial veins. Vbeam can also be used to combat acne by treating inflammatory acne vulgaris, post-acne redness, and acne scarring. This can be done at a dermatologist only, and lasts about 15-20 minutes. The results are effective pretty quickly (4-6 hours pink/red), depending on how your skin recovers.

5. Fraxel

What it is, what it does, how often/where/average cost

The Fraxel treatment is the most intense of the five. There are ranges of less to more invasive treatments, but if you’re wanting change quickly, this is it. Fraxel is a laser treatment that removes any kind of damage you could think of: aging spots, sun spots, deep lines and wrinkles, and scars. This has a 24-hour downtime and takes 7-10 days to finish peeling, but is well-worth the wait. I’d recommend only doing this every 3-5 years since it is so invasive. My personal favorite is to start with the VBeam first, which takes care of capillaries, broken blood vessels, scarring, and Then follow with Fraxel.

These options can get pretty expensive, so for those needing more budget-friendly options, I’d recommend trying a retinol, an enzyme peel, or a toning solution. Here are some of my favorite products that have been game-changers for me:

Game-Changing Products

Here's a fun fact: “Many skincare products benefit from being kept in the fridge,” says Clinicbe founder and aesthetic doctor, Dr Barbara Kubicka. “Specifically, natural products and those that contain few preservatives. The cold helps ingredients stay potent for longer—especially antioxidants, growth factors, and peptides—as well as extending their shelf life.” When a skincare label instructs you to keep your product in a “cool, dark place,” a skincare fridge instantly ticks both boxes.

And..let’s not forget about the men!

Men Products

Favorite Lip Products

I know this can get overwhelming -- there are all sorts of products and brands and ideas out there to try. Do some additional research and decide what your skin needs this season. Give one product or treatment a shot, let your skin adjust, and then add more variety over time. Just remember one product can’t do everything for you. The best skincare is the one that “involves protection, prevention, and hydration” (The Derm Review).

Whether it’s a really simple routine with one exfoliant, or a more advanced treatment from an esthetician, taking care of your skin is key. By using these recommendations, your skin tone will improve, boosting collagen production and making your skin look radiant and healthy.
