A Life Remembered
Echoes of Helen is a deeply personal memoir about my mother, Helen, a woman whose strength, love, and resilience shaped my life in immeasurable ways. This memoir captures the intimate and spiritual journey of her battle with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare bile duct cancer, and the months I spent by her side as she faced the greatest challenge of her life. Through our story, I hope to shed light on the impact of secrets, betrayal, and unspoken emotional pain that can manifest in our physical health. It’s a tribute to her life, her love, and the indomitable spirit that carried her through the darkest moments. Ultimately, Echoes of Helen is not just a reflection of her fight with cancer, but also a testament to the profound connections that sustain us in life and death.

Mission
At the heart of Echoes of Helen is the mission to raise awareness about cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and often misunderstood cancer, and to highlight the powerful connection between our emotional and physical well-being. Through sharing Helen’s story, I aim to inspire families, caregivers, and those affected by this disease to open up difficult conversations about health, secrets, and healing. By supporting research, advocacy, and education about bile duct cancer, we can work toward improving treatment options and supporting those battling the disease. This story serves as a reminder of the importance of speaking our truths, seeking support, and fostering connections that give us strength in our most vulnerable moments.
Vision
Life is short, fragile, and precious. The vision behind Echoes of Helen is to remind readers to fully embrace the time we have with our loved ones. This memoir is a call to action to cherish the moments, speak your truth, and live authentically without letting fear or regret guide you. I envision a world where the awareness of rare cancers like cholangiocarcinoma is amplified, inspiring more research and attention from the medical community. But beyond that, it’s a vision of a life lived with purpose—one where we honor our deepest connections, care for our health, and never take a single day for granted. Let Helen's story be a reminder that our time here is limited, so let’s love fiercely, live boldly, and help others along the way.

For someones first book, I think this was beautifully written from the heart, without fear of saying the wrong thing. Helen was a favorite loved one of so many different family members, and getting to see a glimpse in each of her relationships and the loved shared in them, is truly heartwarming.
Fighting a ailment thats completely in God's hands, while continually being the type of human she raised her family to model themselves after. She was an inspiration to many, and held strong in everything she believed in.
Definitely would recommend!

A really powerful book with an a linear narrative structure, and decadent but controlled emotions.

"Echoes of Helen" by Regina Duke is an incredibly poignant and moving tale that delves into the complexities of family dynamics during one of life’s most challenging times—dealing with a loved one’s terminal illness. The story centers around the struggles of Helen, a mother facing cancer, and the intricate relationships that unfold among her family members as they come together in her final days.
Duke's portrayal of Helen’s illness is both sensitive and authentic, capturing the raw emotions that accompany such a heartbreaking journey. The narrative is built upon not just the sadness of impending loss but also the beauty of familial bonds that emerge in times of crisis. Each character is meticulously crafted, allowing readers to feel their pain, love, and resilience. As Helen's family rallies around her, the book beautifully illustrates how their collective strength becomes a source of solace, highlighting the importance of support and togetherness in the face of adversity.
What struck me most was how Duke weaves the intricacies of family dynamics into the storyline. Each character grapples with their own emotions, regrets, and hopes, yet together they create a tapestry of love that transcends the sorrow they face. The moments of laughter, tears, and reflection serve as powerful reminders that even in the darkest times, the light of family love can shine through.
The inclusion of photographs adds an intimate touch to the narrative, enhancing the reader’s connection to the characters and their shared experiences. It’s as if Duke invites us into their world, allowing us to witness and partake in their journey of love, loss, and ultimately, healing. The cover is gorgeous and when you read the book you will realize how appropriate it is to the writing.
"Echoes of Helen" tugged at my heartstrings and resonated deeply within me. I found myself reading it twice in one evening, unable to put it down. It offers a profound lesson on the significance of family—how, despite the sadness that accompanies loss, the presence and support of loved ones can create an environment of hope and comfort.
Regina Duke has crafted a heartfelt tribute to the enduring power of family, and her storytelling is both captivating and insightful.
